The first World Rewilding Day took place on March 20th, 2021. Now a successful yearly event, World Rewilding Day brings together rewilders and supporters from all around the world to share awareness of the growing movement, inspire others to join, and remind rewilders that they are not alone in their mission. Rewilding is a hopeful, practical global movement happening across each continent, bringing together millions of people who are inspired by the undeniable proof of life rebounding.

Join this year’s celebration.

Choose Our Future

This year’s theme #ChooseOurFuture revitalises a powerful, unified narrative where hope is grounded in evidence: a thriving future is already being built.  The future is a mosaic of choices – nothing is set, it’s all to play for. Choose Our Future is about imagining and creating a world we want to live in, for ourselves and generations to come. Collectively and individually, we can be a positive force for change.

What is rewilding?

Rewilding is about restoring the web of life from cities to the wildest places on the planet, by taking the long-term view, and embracing natural solutions to environmental, social and economic challenges.

As expressed by the Global Charter for Rewilding the Earth: Rewilding means helping nature heal. Rewilding means giving space back to wildlife and returning wildlife back to the land and the seas towards the mass recovery of ecosystems and the life-supporting functions they provide. Rewilding is about allowing natural processes to shape whole ecosystems so that they work in all their colourful complexity to give life to the land and the seas.

Rewilding revitalises our beautiful planet, but more than this, rewilding is bringing massive benefits to communities by helping to reduce flooding, fire and drought, and bringing new jobs where previously there was rural decline. Even in cities, rewilding is making millions of lives better by reducing temperatures and returning life, security and possibility to the places we call home.

The time for rewilding has come

Rewilding is a much-needed holistic approach as it aims to restore ecosystem functions on which human wellbeing and prosperity depend. It is a systemic solution for a systemic problem, and it addresses simultaneously two of the biggest challenges facing humankind: biodiversity extinction and climate change.

The many rewilding initiatives that are part of the Global Rewilding Alliance, and their achievements, (many of them large scale) show that this can be done - and much faster than one might believe. Rewilding is proving to be a powerful vision that is turning into reality.

Rewilding philosophy is based on active hope and practical optimism and inspires people from all walks of life around the globe to take action. It’s the perfect antidote to climate anxiety, apathy, despair and disengagement.

From national parks and rivers to oceans and backyard gardens, successes show that a thriving future is possible.

Bringing rewilders together

The intention of World Rewilding Day is to engage more and more people in our beautiful movement - but also to encourage each other; like any form of leadership, rewilding can be a challenging, exhausting and isolating pursuit, so seeing the stories of other rewilders around the world can really encourage each of us. This makes us a more cohesive, effective and enjoyable movement.

To do this, we will be coming together to capture the courageous, pragmatic and innovative spirit that imbues the global rewilding movement, by sharing stories that focus on the people doing the rewilding, the actions they are taking, the challenges they are facing and overcoming, and perhaps some of the dramatic moments that they have had.

Get Involved & Get in Touch

On March 20, 2026, the Global Rewilding Alliance will celebrate the impressive rewilding transformation we are already experiencing and to be part of a movement that’s acting towards a thriving future for all.

Here's how you can be part of it:

  • Share your vision — Tell us about the future you choose. Post a statement, photo, video, or artwork sharing imaginations of nature rebounding, and a thriving future, grounded in today’s actions. Say it from the heart! Use #ChooseOurFuture and #WorldRewildingDay.
  • Show the future you are already building — Perhaps you already experience life rebounding from your actions - inspire others! Photos, videos, illustrations, maps, or before-and-after visuals are welcome. A single powerful image can transport people into the future you are creating.
  • Connect locally — Not already involved? Find rewilding organisations near you.
  • Spread the word — Get others involved to help grow the movement.
