Youths from different groups within Kisumu on 15 May 2025 converged at United Destiny Shapers grounds in Nyalenda to acquire skills on how to establish and manage tree nurseries for commercial purposes under the Generation Restoration Project.
Inspired to create employment and to get income, the youths have embarked on a journey to produce and supply seedlings that will be used for conservation of the environment and to reduce carbon sinks.

Mr. Jeff Bonyo , Kisumu East Sub County agricultural officer serving as one of the facilitators encouraged the youths to think commercial as they plan to establish tree nurseries.
He took them through the benefits of trees, seed quality, viability , species and on the best practices on management of tree nurseries.

While Mr. Meshack Okoth Omuono , the research scientist on Agroforestry from the Kenya Forestry Research Institute, trained the youths on certification of tree nurseries.
He delved on the requirements necessary for certification, the validity of the certificate, those who can apply for certification among others.
The duo also took the youths through demos on how to establish tree nurseries using bamboo, fruit trees and nappier grass which are mainly used for conservation.
The exercise came to a climax with planting of seedlings.
Also gracing the event were officers from the Generation Restoration technical working group drawn from different departments within the County.

About Generation Restoration (2023-2025)
The UNEP Generation Restoration project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), focuses on scaling up urban ecosystem restoration. Running from 2023 to 2025, UNEP, in collaboration with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and ICLEI’s Global Biodiversity Centre, is working with 24 cities to address key political, technical, and financial challenges. The project has two key components: advocating for public and private investment in ecosystem restoration and job creation through nature-based solutions and empowering city stakeholders globally to replicate and scale restoration initiatives. This initiative stands as a contribution to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
About the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
The UN General Assembly has declared 2021–2030 a UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Led by the UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, together with the support of partners, it is designed to prevent, halt, and reverse the loss and degradation of ecosystems worldwide. It aims at reviving billions of hectares, covering terrestrial as well as aquatic ecosystems. A global call to action, the UN Decade draws together political support, scientific research, and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration.
