The newly released 3rd edition of the International Principles and Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration (the SER Standards) updates and expands globally relevant guidance for ecological restoration in any type of terrestrial, inland water, or coastal or marine ecosystem. Aligned with the CBD COP17 theme, ‘Taking action for nature,’ the SER Standards provide clear, coherent, and versatile guidance for designing, implementing, and monitoring restoration projects and programs. 

Standards-based restoration is essential for reducing the risk and uncertainty associated with restoration, and therefore improving restoration outcomes. Building on years of feedback from real-world experience with the first and second editions, the third edition updates the Restorative Continuum, improves the ecological recovery and social benefits wheels, expands practitioner Standards of Practice, and provides increased guidance on financing and delivering restoration across sectors. 

Recognizing that Target 2 calls for effective restoration, and that the CBD's guide to Target 2 has defined this as standards-based restoration that leads to balanced net gain for people and nature, this Third Edition of the SER Standards provides updated support to parties for meeting planning, designing, implementing, and monitoring their Target 2 work to achieve these outcomes. 

Delivered as a roundtable for a diverse audience of government officials, UN agencies, civil society, and private‑sector actors, this session is designed to be highly interactive as we celebrate the launch of the Third Edition. Speakers will explain the value of standards-based restoration and introduce key new content from the SER Standards. The session will also provide significant opportunities for participant exchange, including discussion of restoration experiences across regions and opportunities for collaboration.
