The 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) is set to take place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. As a crucial gathering for global biodiversity conservation, CBD COP16 will focus on implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a comprehensive plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.
One of the highlights of CBD COP16 will be Restoration Day, scheduled for October 30, 2024. The world can no longer achieve its climate, biodiversity or land degradation neutrality goals without massively scaling up ecosystem restoration.
Restoration Day will be CBD COP16s prime meeting place for the global restoration movement. It will connect leaders, experts, and advocates from around the world to discuss and advance the cause of ecosystem restoration and tackle the sticking points in negotiation and implementation.
By restoring degraded ecosystems, we can:
- Combat climate change: Forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- Protect biodiversity: Restoring habitats can help species recover from population declines and prevent extinction.
- Improve livelihoods: Ecosystem restoration can create jobs and provide benefits for local communities, such as improved water quality and increased agricultural yields.
What to Expect at Restoration Day
At Restoration Day, attendees can expect:
- High-level discussions: Ministers and representatives from international organizations will share their insights and commitments to ecosystem restoration.
- Inspiring stories: Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and youth will share their experiences and successes in restoration efforts.
- Practical insights: Experts will discuss financing, monitoring, and scaling up restoration initiatives.
- Networking opportunities: Attendees can connect with like-minded individuals and organizations to build partnerships and collaborations.
