Ever wondered what rewilding on the ground and restoring fascinating species is really like?

Join Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative for this interactive discussion and short-film viewing with some of Kazakhstan’s leading wildlife specialists.

Altyn Dala is restoring the vast, wild expanse of the Kazakh steppe in Central Asia - the largest expanse of semi-desert grassland in the world. This landscape hosts some incredible species - among them, the Saiga Antelope.

The Saiga – distinguished by its large, bulbous nose – is superbly adapted to the harsh conditions of this remote landscape. And theirs is a story of hope; after their populations hit an all-time low of just 21,000 in the 90s, specialists came together to recover it, leading to their 2.8 million-strong census in 2024.

Altyn Dala has been satellite tagging Saiga antelope since 2009. Satellite tagging is crucial for the animal’s long-term protection, tracking the saiga’s migratory patterns and much more. However, it is not easy to tag an animal that runs faster than a passenger train!

This event will delve into this incredible wildlife restoration story and talk about Saiga tagging, a practice that has led to the designation of over 5 million hectares of newly protected areas.
