Land restoration is essential for combatting the climate and biodiversity crises and at the same time enhance food and water security. Government commitments to restore degraded landscapes, such as those under the Bonn Challenge and relevant regional initiatives, total close to 1 billion hectares of land and span 115 countries. This ambition was further buoyed by the announcement of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, 2021-2030, the Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use, and the global restoration target under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

To enhance restoration outcomes and assist stakeholders to meet ambitious restoration commitments, there is a need to plan, monitor, and track restoration efforts, extent, and impact. This Implementation Lab will feature cutting-edge innovations for restoration monitoring and hear about partnerships that are helping track restoration outcomes on the ground.

Participants will understand the value of monitoring restoration efforts to measure progress against national and international climate and biodiversity goals; the importance of utilizing tracking systems that produce high-quality results; and the types of frameworks, tools, methods, and platforms that are currently being used to enable monitoring.

Goal:

  • Create shared understanding that high quality monitoring should be standard practice in order to demonstrate impacts, and showcase that there are frameworks, tools, methods, platforms, etc out there to enable monitoring

  • Agree that more transparency and specificity is needed in implementation of restoration monitoring for accountability and comparability
